Catching Gengar directly in the wild is rare, but evolving a Haunter (which you get from catching Gastly) is a more common way to get one.

Gengar isn't super rare but it's not super common either. You can usually find its pre-evolution, Gastly, more frequently during in-game events like Halloween.

Well, considering I've only seen like 2 Gengars in the wild in over 3 years, I'd say pretty rare!
