Sonic the Hedgehog was created in 1991 by a team at Sega led by Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima. They wanted a character who could compete with Nintendo's Mario, and Sonic's super-speed and '90s attitude fit the bill perfectly!

The game was born from Sega's desire to make a faster, more dynamic game than what was currently available, and Sonic's blue color was a nod to Sega's logo.
