Switch the game to fullscreen mode and lower the resolution. Sometimes a simple tweak can work wonders.
Turn off some of the more demanding graphical settings like dynamic lighting and shadows; your PC will thank you.
Make sure your drivers are up to date, especially your graphics card drivers. My game ran much smoother after a quick update!
