Honestly, just use the Steam overlay (Shift+Tab) while in-game. You can add friends directly through Steam this way, which is way easier. Then, when they accept, they'll show up in your Apex friends list too.
Directly through the Steam client works best for me. Just find your buddy's Steam profile, add them as a friend, and boom, they're ready to join you in Apex. No fuss, no muss.
