You gotta be an admin to do this. If you are, just open the group, tap the name at the top, choose 'Add participants,' and pick your friends from your contacts.
From my experience, the fastest way is to use the group link. Go to group settings, create an invite link, and share it with your friends.
If you're not an admin, you can't add friends directly. Ask an admin to do it for you.
