You actually can't download WhatsApp directly on an iPad, but you can use WhatsApp Web! Open Safari, go to web.whatsapp.com, and scan the QR code with your phone.
Unfortunately, no official WhatsApp app for iPad exists. Use WhatsApp Web. Go to web.whatsapp.com in Safari and use the QR code from your phone's WhatsApp.
Why not just use your phone? It's simpler and easier. Not worth the trouble on an iPad.
