You shouldn't need to appear offline. If you’re on MW2, they’re gonna know anyway. Just embrace it!

What you need to do is: 1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide. 2. Go to your profile & system (your gamerpic). 3. Select 'Appear online', then 'Appear offline'. Done and dusted!
