Honestly, just send in your strongest troops with your best commanders. If you can, use AoE commanders to hit multiple targets at once. Simple but effective.
Be sure to scout the pass first! Get a good read on enemy strength and defenses, then plan accordingly. Oh, and bring LOTS of siege units!
I've attacked passes multiple times, and what worked best for me was to use infantry units as the backbone of the attack. They survive longer and deal a good amount of damage. Plus, having a healer commander in the mix helps keep your troops alive longer!
