I found using characters with long-range attacks, like Pit or Samus, really helped. Stay out of harm's way and chip away at Tabuu's health from a distance.

I used Meta Knight and his quick attacks to get in and out with minimal damage. Keep moving and don't give Tabuu a chance to land any big hits.
