You can also go to Facebook, find the person's profile, click on the three dots in the corner of their cover photo, and then select 'Block'. Worked like a charm for me!

If you're using the Messenger app, tap on the profile picture of the person you want to block, then scroll down and tap 'Block'. No more annoying messages!
Blocking is too drastic. Just ignore the messages if you don't want to deal with them.
