As someone who does this regularly: Turn on your Xbox controller, hold the pair button till the Xbox button flashes, and on your phone's Bluetooth settings, search and connect to 'Xbox Wireless Controller'. Voilà!

Not all Xbox controllers have Bluetooth. Check for a plastic part around the Xbox button—if it's the same as the rest of the controller, you're good to go! Then follow the pairing steps.
