Honestly, breaking Demon Altars is kinda overrated. You can progress just fine by fishing for crates and getting hardmode ores that way. No need to deal with the corruption/crimson spreading faster.
Breaking Demon Altars in Terraria is pretty simple but crucial for game progress. First off, you'll need a Pwnhammer or any better hammer, which you can only get by defeating the Wall of Flesh boss in the Underworld. Once you've got your hands on one of these hammers, just approach the Demon Altar and give it a good whack with the hammer. Be ready, though; breaking a Demon Altar will spawn a few Wraiths to attack you and also bless your world with new, hardmode ores!
Been there, done that – the first time I broke a Demon Altar, I wasn't ready for the Wraiths and got demolished. Make sure you're prepared for the fight after you break one. And seriously, the Pwnhammer is the only way to do it. Anything else just won't cut it.
