Axe? Pickaxe? Sword? All do the trick. Terraria doesn't make you picky about it. Just aim and hit. Though, using a pickaxe feels more satisfying. Trust me on this.
Fun fact: you can actually use your bare hands to remove wood platforms if you're patient enough. Just stand under or over them and punch away. Of course, tools like the pickaxe do the job faster and without giving you a virtual workout.
