Totally disagree with the idea you need to save them in levels - focus on earning them in camp by completing quests and achievements. Trust me, it's a slower burn but pays off!
Just a heads up, you can't physically take gems from levels back to camp. It doesn't work that way. Save 'em up by not using them outside camp.
