I've built a dozen bases in Sons of the Forest. The key is to start small and expand gradually. Prioritize a shelter and fire, then build up your defenses.
Just slap some logs together and hope for the best. (Kidding, but do gather lots of materials.)
First, clear an area of trees and underbrush. Lay down a blueprint for your base with the build menu, then gather resources to complete the structure. Make sure to add defensive walls and traps to keep those pesky mutants out!
