In my experience, the Helminth system is a game-changer. Just complete the Heart of Deimos quest, and you'll find the Helminth room in your Orbiter. Feed it resources, subsume Warframes, and mix abilities to your heart's content!
You need the Heart of Deimos quest to unlock the Helminth system. After that, it's all about feeding, subsuming, and experimenting.
