Actually, you can't buy houses in the traditional sense for all characters in GTA 5 story mode. Only Trevor, Franklin, and Michael have specific safe houses that get unlocked as you progress through the story. Online shopping for pads is more of an GTA Online thing. You can, however, invest in businesses and other properties to earn more income!
