I just did this! Open the PlayStation Store, scroll down to 'Add-Ons', click on 'Avatars', then find one you like. Follow the prompts to purchase it. Simple!

Easy peasy! Just go to the PlayStation Store from the main menu, look for 'Avatars' under the 'Add-Ons' section, and choose the one you like. Pay up and voilà, new avatar!
