Don't overthink it - just get those coins ready and talk to NPCs. Different ones sell different awesome gear.
Protip: Keep an eye out for the Traveling Merchant. This guy pops up randomly and sells unique items that you can't find anywhere else. It's like a treasure hunt but you're spending, not finding, treasures.
