To check your PS3's hard drive space, go to the Settings menu, then navigate to System Settings, and select System Information. Bam! You'll see your free space listed right there.

I’ve done this a hundred times. Go to Settings, then System Settings, and choose System Information. It’ll show free space and system software version.
