Just press the Xbox Guide button (the big one in the center with the Xbox logo). A battery indicator will pop up showing the remaining charge.

You can also check the battery life on the Xbox 360 console's dashboard. Go to the settings tab, then select 'Preferences' and 'Battery Meter.'
