Just connect your Xbox Series X controller to your PC via Bluetooth or USB, then open the Xbox Game Bar (Win + G). Go to the 'Performance' tab, and you'll see the battery level there.

Open up the Xbox Accessories app on your PC. It'll display the battery level right there. Easy peasy!

You can always just look at the controller itself. If the Xbox button is dim, it's likely time to charge up!
