imo, just pick the gear that looks the coolest to you and roll with it. Terraria's pretty forgiving, you can switch anytime if you don't like your current setup.
I've been rocking the mage class since my first playthrough, nothing beats the satisfaction of nuking enemies with powerful spells! Plus, the mage gear looks epic.
