Just tap the tilde key (~) again! It's like using a light switch; tap it on to open the console, and tap it off to close it.

Pressing the tilde key (~) once more should do the trick. If that doesn't work, check if your keyboard layout is messing with you. Some keyboards need you to press ` or the actual key depending on your region.
