Tried it myself, you have to plug in the USB first to sync the Afterglow controller with your PS3. After that, it's wireless!

Unfortunately, you can't connect an Afterglow controller to a PS3 without a USB cable initially. You need to use the USB cable for the initial sync, and then you can go wireless.
