First-hand experience here: Plugged my FAT32 formatted external drive right into the PS3's USB port. It showed up instantly under 'Music', 'Video', or 'Pictures' in the XMB menu!
Honestly, if your hard drive isn't in FAT32 format, it's not gonna work with the PS3. Reformat it, then connect via USB.
Just plug your external hard drive's USB cable into one of the PS3's USB ports. Make sure the hard drive is formatted to FAT32, as the PS3 doesn't support NTFS.
