Make sure your external hard drive is USB 3.0 and has a capacity between 250GB and 8TB. Plug it into a USB port, go to Settings, then Devices, then USB Storage Devices, and format it as extended storage. Easy peasy.
Plug in your external hard drive, format it as extended storage under Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices. Done!
I've used a Seagate external drive for my PS4, and it worked like a charm! Just plug it in, go to Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices, select the drive, and hit 'Format as Extended Storage'. You'll have tons of extra space in no time.
