Honestly, just plug it in and go. The Steam Deck should recognize it right away. If not, double-check the format of your drive - it might need to be FAT32 or exFAT.
A lot of people think you need some fancy setup, but nah. Just connect the external drive, and most of the time, Steam Deck handles the rest.
