Make sure your headset is in Xbox mode. Connect the base station via USB and optical cable, then update the firmware using Astro Command Center if needed. Finally, pair the headset through Xbox settings.

I had trouble with this too! Make sure to put the headset in Xbox mode (switch is on the back of the base station), connect the USB and optical cables to the console, and check that your Xbox is set to output sound through optical. Works like a charm!
