Just chop trees, get wood, and boom! Craft a hammer at a workbench. Easy peasy.

Crafting a hammer in Terraria is super easy! All you need is a workbench and some wood or metal bars. You start by gathering about 8 pieces of wood which you can get by chopping down trees with your starting axe. Head to your workbench, open your crafting menu, and you should see the option to craft a wooden hammer. If you're feeling fancy and have mined some metal, you can use bars like iron or lead (again, you'll need about 8) to craft a stronger hammer at the anvil. Just make sure you've built that anvil with your workbench first!

Honestly, why bother with wooden hammers when you can go straight for the good stuff? Mine some iron and craft an iron hammer. You'll thank me later.
