I've done this a thousand times: go to the message, click the three dots, and hit 'Remove for Everyone'. Works like a charm!
To delete messages on Facebook permanently, open the chat, click the three dots next to the message, and select 'Remove'. Then choose 'Remove for Everyone' for a permanent delete.
Just open the chat, hover over the message, click on the three dots, and select 'Remove'! Easy peasy!
