Nope, you can't delete special research. The best you can do is just leave it there unfinished or focus on other tasks.
Sadly, there's no way to delete special research tasks, but you can always pace yourself and take your time completing them.
You simply can't get rid of special research tasks in Pokemon GO. Just let it sit in the background and focus on catching 'em all!
