Easy peasy! Look at the group number for the main group elements (columns 1-2 and 13-18). That's your valence electrons! For instance, oxygen is in group 16, so it has 6 valence electrons.

For transition metals, it's trickier 'cause they involve d-orbitals. But for the main groups, just look at the group number. Bingo!

Yeah, just count the columns from left to right for groups 1-2 and 13-18. Ignore transition metals unless you love headaches.
