If you wanna avoid seeing chat, hit ESC, go to the options menu, then under 'Multiplayer' settings, uncheck the box for in-game chat. No more text shenanigans!

Skip all that, just turn voice_enable 0 in the console and text chat will be disabled too. Works like a charm!

Easy peasy! Just go to the advanced multiplayer options in TF2 and check 'Disable Chat'. Boom, done!
