Personal experience: I've been using WhatsApp for years, and changing Last Seen to 'Nobody' in Privacy settings totally works for me to hide my online status!
In WhatsApp, head over to Settings, then Account, then Privacy. Change 'Last Seen' to 'Nobody' and voila!
Go to Settings > Account > Privacy. Then set your Last Seen status to 'Nobody'. Poof! You're a ghost on WhatsApp!
Settings > Account > Privacy. Change Last Seen to 'Nobody' and wave goodbye to your online status.
