Easy peasy! Open Steam, go to 'Settings' > 'In-Game' and then find the 'Steam Overlay' section. Here, you can either uncheck the box for 'Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game' to completely turn it off, or click on 'Steam Overlay shortcut keys' to change it to something other than Shift+Tab. This way, you won't accidentally bring up the overlay in the heat of gaming moments.

Just uncheck the Steam Overlay option in settings. It stops the Shift+Tab thing altogether.

Honestly, I barely notice it. Shift+Tab is pretty handy for chatting with friends during a game or checking notifications without having to alt+tab out. Why disable it?
