To discontinue your Facebook account, go to Settings > Your Facebook Information > Deactivation and Deletion. Then choose 'Permanently Delete Account' and follow the steps.
From my experience, once you delete your FB account, you have a 30-day grace period to change your mind. After that, poof, it's gone forever.
Just a heads-up: deactivating your account will only make it temporarily inactive, but deleting it will permanently remove everything. Choose wisely!
