You have to open the character menu, head to the companion tab, and hit 'Dismiss' beside the companion you want to get rid of. Bye bye, buddy!

Dismissal is done via the character menu.

In my playthrough, I had to go to the menu, select my companion, and then select 'Dismiss.' It worked like a charm!

To send your companion away in The Outer Worlds, just go to the companion screen in the menu, select the one you want to dismiss, and choose the 'dismiss' option. Easy peasy!
