Honestly, shell jumps are overrated. Stick to simpler tricks if you're not having fun with them.
To do a midair shell jump, grab a shell, jump into the air, throw the shell against a wall, then quickly jump off the rebounding shell. Timing is everything!
Hold the run button to grab a shell, jump up, release the shell, and then press jump again as it bounces off a surface back towards you.
