To execute a phantom jump, you'll need to utilize the Cape Feather (from Super Mario World styles). Run, then duck and jump at the same time. As you land, release the duck button just enough to hover before pressing jump again. Boom, phantom jump!

I found that using the Frog Suit in the Super Mario Bros. 3 style worked wonders. Jump, tap right, right, left, left, right, jump again. Tada! Phantom jump magic.

Use the Propeller Mushroom from the New Super Mario Bros. styles. Jump, then quickly press and hold the spin button for a mid-air boost. Timing is everything!

You can't do a real 'phantom jump' in Super Mario Maker, but mastering slide jumps with the right items can mimic one quite well. Practice makes perfect!
