You can use different characters in Super Mario Maker 2 by equipping Mii costumes in the Course Maker. Just head to Course World, then to the Maker Profile, and finally to the Customize section!
Unlock different characters in the Super Mario Bros. mash-up style by hitting '?' blocks in the style-specific 100 Mario Challenge mode.
You can't normally swap Mario out for other characters, but you can change the look with costumes or amiibo support! Trust me, I've spent hours doing it.
