Nope, PS5 games gotta first go to the internal SSD. Once downloaded, you can move them to an external USB drive via 'Settings' -> 'Storage.'
I've done this a bunch of times! Download your PS5 games to the console first. Then go to 'Settings' -> 'Storage' -> 'Console Storage' -> 'Games and Apps', select your game, and hit 'Move to USB Extended Storage.'
