You just gotta buy the DLC from Nintendo eShop. It's not free, but worth it!
Check the Nintendo eShop for DLC packs! They regularly release new characters there. Once you buy, they get added to your roster automatically. No fuss, no muss.
I downloaded new DLC characters for Smash by getting the Fighter Pass on the Switch eShop. Super simple and they were instantly available in-game. Highly recommend it!
