Honestly, it's simpler to just play the maps available. Custom maps are cool and all, but the hassle on iOS... not worth it in my opinion.
Been there, done that! Had to use my laptop to transfer a custom map to my iPad. Bit of a process, but totally worth it for the fresh adventure. Just make sure your map file is compatible with the mobile version of Terraria!
