To erase Instagram messages, go to your Direct Messages, open the conversation, and tap and hold the message you want to delete. Select 'Unsend' and voila, it's gone from both sides!
Don't overthink it. Just go to DMs, find the chat, swipe left, and hit delete. Done.
From personal experience, just open the chat, hold down the message, and choose 'Unsend.' Works like a charm every time!
