Go to Settings > Account Management > System Activation. Deactivate your account, then head to Users > Delete User to remove it!

Just log into your PS3, go to Users, select the account you want to delete, and hit the triangle button. Choose 'Delete' and confirm. Done!

Last time I did this, I went to Settings, then Account Management. From there, I deactivated my account under System Activation before deleting the user under Users. It was smooth sailing!

You don't really "erase" an account exactly; you deactivate it and then delete the user. Simple as that!
