From my experience, just focus on battling a lot and mingling when you can. Also, remember to check the pin's evolution requirements in the menu!
To evolve pins in The World Ends With You, you gotta level them up by earning PP (Pin Points). Some pins need Battle PP, Mingle PP, or Shutdown PP to evolve, so make sure you're mixing it up!
Honestly, just play the game! Pin evolution will happen naturally as you earn PP. No need to stress too much!
