To favorite something in Terraria, just hold the 'Alt' key and left-click the item in your inventory. It'll frame it with a border, showing it's favorited, so you won't accidentally trash or sell it!

Don't overthink it, just Alt-click. If it's not working, your Alt key is probably staging a rebellion.
