Pro tip – search for enclaves and see if they have a member with the mechanic skill. If so, butter them up and recruit them!

You can also recruit survivors who already have a mechanic skill. Just look out for their skills in the character menu when you meet them.

Honestly, you don't always need a mechanic. Get the 'Mechanics Textbook' and train one of your survivors.
