If you need a more systematic approach, consider downloading your Instagram data. Go to Settings > Security > Download Data. You'll get a file with all your messages.
I had to dig through my DMs once for a project. The search bar in the DMs saved me a ton of time!
You can use the search bar in your DMs and type some keywords or the name of the person to find older messages quicker.
